The Black Staff Association of the United Methodist Church is a non-profit professional organization dedicated to serving the needs of black staff serving The United Methodist Church in staff positions with UMC boards, agencies, conferences, jurisdictions, and districts. BSA will work collaboratively with all segments of The United Methodist Church in order to strengthen relationships that help to equip staff to more effectively network, empower and engage missional in our communities as we seek to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of our global world.

Associate General Secretary, Executive Officer, New Church Starts

Discipleship Ministries, an agency of The United Methodist Church, is seeking an exceptional candidate for our vacancy of Associate General Secretary (AGS), Executive Officer, New Church Starts. The incumbent of this position serves as Executive Officer of the division for new congregational development and exercises general administrative oversight of the New Church Starts division. 

The AGS, Executive Officer works with Discipleship Ministries General Secretary, the Council of Bishops (COB), and the Path 1 Team to give general administrative oversight to the division. The AGS, Executive Officer provides leadership for the coordination of work, budgeting, programming, visioning, planning, and staffing functions. This position is accountable for leading the division in appropriate relationships with all Discipleship Ministries’ ministry divisions, counterparts in other general agencies, “Path 1 Team”, and the Council of Bishops (COB). This position ensures that the division has an understanding of mission and vision and a climate of mutual support and encouragement. 

The AGS, Executive Officer is accountable for the above stated work and for the implementation of goals and objectives of the division as negotiated with the COB in conjunction with the Path 1 Team for New Church Development, the Board of Directors, and the General Secretary of Discipleship Ministries. The AGS, Executive Officer serves as a member of the executive staff leadership team with responsibility for working with the General Secretary to facilitate the appropriate functioning of the objectives and initiatives of the Path 1 Team and Discipleship Ministries in relationship to new church development and evangelism in the USA. Assures the appropriate functioning and implementation of Discipleship Ministries’ policies and decisions, and carries out programs and directions assigned.

Education/Experience

  • Master’s Degree  in a related field or equivalency
  • Five to seven years’ experience in the work of congregational development

Additional Knowledge and Practices Required

  • Have knowledge of The United Methodist Church structure and theology
  • Long-term involvement in the United Methodist Church and deeply rooted in Christian faith and practice
  • Demonstrated professional and academic knowledge and recognized experience in new church development
  • Knowledge of research design, development and interpretation
  • Demonstrated proficiency in planning, organizing, leadership development, team building, and decision making
  • Ability to clarify concepts and move concepts to appropriate implementation or action
  • Experience in event planning
  • Knowledge of systems theory, strong communication skills and demonstrated cultural sensitivity
  • Knowledge of intergenerational differences
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a wide cross section of people; particularly racial ethnic, multi-cultural, urban, low-socioeconomic, language based, and marginalized people
  • Ability to express faith and has a personal commitment to growing in faith
  • Possesses computer and electronic media skills
