The Black Staff Association of the United Methodist Church is a non-profit professional organization dedicated to serving the needs of black staff serving The United Methodist Church in staff positions with UMC boards, agencies, conferences, jurisdictions, and districts. Discipleship Ministries is Accepting Applications for , Associate General Secretary, Leadership Ministries

Discipleship Ministries, an agency of The United Methodist Church, is seeking an exceptional candidate for our vacancy of Associate General Secretary (AGS), Leadership Ministries.  The incumbent of this position serves as AGS of the Leadership Ministries unit and exercises general administrative oversight for the Discipleship Resources department. 

The Associate General Secretary (AGS) is accountable for the planning, coordination and implementation of goals and objectives of the division as approved by the General Board to support the General Board’s vision/mission.  The AGS serves as a member of the executive staff management group with responsibility for working with the General Secretary to facilitate the appropriate functioning of the General Board and the implementation of General Board policies and decisions.  The AGS carries out programs and directions of General Conference.

The AGS provides leadership for the coordination, budgeting, programming, visioning, planning, and staffing functions; guides and administers the inter-workings of job functions and personnel to set vision and carry out strategic directions within the mission; and is accountable for leading the Discipleship Ministries division in appropriate relationships with all other Discipleship Ministries divisions.


Master’s Degree or equivalency

Five to seven years of related experience

Knowledge of theology and Christian faith formation

Additional Knowledge and Practices Required

  • Position requires the incumbent to be a person of hope and vision, deeply rooted in Christian faith and practice and have a profound sense of the importance of the making of Christian disciples
  • Membership with United Methodist Church
  • Advanced knowledge and experience in long-range and strategic planning
  • Knowledge in administrative and financial management
  • Knowledge and understanding of structure and polity of The United Methodist Church
  • Demonstrated ability, sensitivity, and skill in understanding, relating to, influencing and motivating people
  • Proficiency in communication skills, written and oral
  • Demonstrated cultural sensitivity
  • Motivational and organizational skills
  • Ability to be flexible and work in a team environment and continuous improvement knowledge
