I carry profoundly sad news today. My mentor and brother-from-another-mother, Bishop Felton Edwin May, today announced he has pancreatic cancer. For nearly 30 years he has been my rock in faith. Michelle, Stephanie, and I are privileged to be part of the May family.
Bishop May is a lion of The United Methodist Church. He is a prophetic voice for justice for the poor, the marginalized, and the outcast. He is responsible for literally hundreds of persons coming forth to dedicate their lives to Christian service. In his years as an active bishop he gained a reputation for asking the key question that needs to be asked; not always popular, but always focused on Christ's lead.
Bishop May seeks your prayers as he, Phyllis, his wife and their family live through the course of this disease, treasuring and celebrating the gift of life. Every day, Felton continues to do what he has done for many decades, seeking to follow the way of our Lord.
I'll have lots more to say in the near future. Bishop May is a dynamic preacher, and will never forget the times when he has preached from the text of Isaiah 40:31: "Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength; they will fly up on inhale like eagles; they will run and not be tired; they will walk and not be weary."
If you want to send him and Phyllis a card or note, their address is:
